Terms and Conditions

Last Updated: 02/06/2026

These Terms and Conditions apply to genealogy research services provided by Regency Relatives (“the Researcher”) to the client.

By commissioning research services, the client agrees to these Terms and Conditions.

1. About Regency Relatives

Regency Relatives provides family history and genealogy research services based on historical records, documentary evidence and historical context.

Research is undertaken with reasonable skill, care and diligence using the sources available at the time of investigation.

2. Research Services

Services may include, but are not limited to:

  • Ancestor Snapshot
  • Ancestor Story
  • Brick Wall Investigation
  • Bespoke genealogy research
  • Historical and social context research

The scope of work for each project will be agreed with the client before research begins.

3. Quotations and Acceptance

All projects are subject to an individual quotation.

A quotation will normally include:

  • The agreed scope of research
  • Estimated timescales
  • Fees payable
  • Expected deliverables

Research will commence only after the client has confirmed acceptance of the quotation.

4. Genealogical Research Limitations

Genealogical research is dependent upon the survival, accessibility and accuracy of historical records.

Regency Relatives cannot guarantee that:

  • Specific records will exist
  • Particular ancestors will be identified
  • Parentage can be proven
  • Research questions will be conclusively answered

The absence of evidence is often a legitimate research finding.

Fees are charged for professional research time, analysis and reporting rather than guaranteed outcomes.

5. Historical Interpretation

Research reports may include historical and social context intended to assist understanding of an ancestor’s life and circumstances.

Where conclusions are based upon documented evidence, this will be made clear.

Where interpretations, theories or possibilities are discussed, they will be identified as such and should not be regarded as proven fact.

6. Client Responsibilities

Clients are responsible for providing accurate information to the best of their knowledge.

The client should only provide information relevant to the research project and should ensure they have the right to share any information relating to living individuals.

7. Fees and Payment

Fees will be agreed before work begins.

Payment arrangements will be confirmed within the quotation.

Unless otherwise agreed, research reports and deliverables may be withheld until payment has been received in full.

8. Timescales

Estimated completion dates are provided in good faith.

However, timescales may be affected by:

  • Archive access restrictions
  • Record availability
  • Unexpected research complexity
  • Illness or circumstances beyond reasonable control

Clients will be informed if significant delays occur.

9. Cancellation

The client may cancel a project before research has commenced without charge.

Where research has already begun, Regency Relatives reserves the right to charge for work completed up to the date of cancellation.

Any applicable charges will be discussed with the client.

10. Intellectual Property

Research reports, written narratives, charts and supporting materials produced by Regency Relatives remain the intellectual property of Regency Relatives unless otherwise agreed in writing.

Clients are welcome to use reports for personal and family history purposes.

Reports may not be reproduced, published, sold or distributed commercially without prior permission.

11. Confidentiality

All client information will be treated confidentially.

Information provided during the course of a project will not be disclosed to third parties unless required by law or with the client’s consent.

Further information is available in the Regency Relatives Privacy Policy.

12. Limitation of Liability

While every effort is made to ensure accuracy, Regency Relatives cannot accept responsibility for:

  • Errors within original historical records
  • Archive transcription errors
  • Information supplied by third parties
  • Conclusions reached by external researchers

Liability for any claim arising from the provision of services shall be limited to the amount paid by the client for the specific project concerned.

13. Complaints

If a client is dissatisfied with any aspect of the service provided, they are encouraged to contact Regency Relatives in the first instance so that concerns can be investigated and resolved wherever possible.

14. Changes to These Terms

Regency Relatives reserves the right to amend these Terms and Conditions from time to time.

The version in force at the time a project is commissioned will apply to that project.

15. Governing Law

These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of England and Wales.

Any disputes shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

MEET THE RESEARCHER

I’m Lisa, a family historian with a particular interest in Regency and Georgian lives. I spend far too much time in archives, drink alarming amounts of tea, and occasionally discover that an entire branch of a family tree is based on an assumption I made in 2007. Find out more about this unsupervised historian.
